15 year old male patient with ankle injury

Findings

Axial T1 image(1) demonstrates T1 hyperintensity and fraying along the expected location of the anterior talofibular ligament. Axial PDFS sequence(2) confirms the findings with non-visualization of the anterior talofibular ligament with associated soft tissue edema as also noted in the sagittal PDFS(3). The medial ankle ligament complex is intact(4).

Diagnosis

Isolated complete tear of anterior talofibular ligament

Summary

Anterior talofibular ligament is the most commonly injured ligament in cases of ankle injury. Along with that it is imperative to evaluate the bones and medial ligament complex.
