
70 year old male patient with acute abdominal pain

Findings
Axial CECT abdomen image at the level of pancreas(1) shows enlargement and heterogeneity of pancreas with associated fat inflammation suggestive of acute interstitial edematous pancreatitis. Image (2) is to look for cause of pancreatitis – cholelithiasis if present is a common cause of pancreatitis appreciated on CT scan. Image (3) is to look for associated ascitis if any and image (4) is to look for patency of splenic vein and portal vein.
Diagnosis
Acute interstitial edematous pancreatitis.
Summary
For cases of pancreatitis, it is imperative to know the types of pancreatitis i.e. interstitial edematous and necrotizing pancreatitis. It is also important to know the anatomy of retroperitoneum and associated findings of pancreatitis. For accurate reporting, it is necessary to be aware of Atlanta classification and modified CT severity index for pancreatitis.
