Findings
- This is a CT topogram but similar findings are seen in abdominal radiograph. Large twisted bowel loop with its tip extending up to the left subphrenic location – findings are highly suggestive of sigmoid colon volvulus.
- Axial CECT abdomen shows twisting of the sigmoid colon upon itself(arrow).
- Marked dilatation of the sigmoid colon is noted with dilatation of the visualized ascending, transverse and descending colon.
- Coronal CECT abdomen shows similar findings as that of a radiograph.
- Axial CECT shows fatty replacement of pancreas suggestive of pancreatic lipomatosis.
- Lung window sections show bronchiectatic changes seen in the visualized bilateral lungs.
Diagnosis
Sigmoid volvulus with pancreatic lipomatosis and bronchiectasis.
Summary
Pancreatic lipomatosis and bronchiectasis are common findings of patients with cystic fibrosis. Such patients also have a higher propensity to develop sigmoid volvulus due to mucous plugging.
